About UsThe Word of God says that if we have just the faith of a tiny mustard seed – that we would be able to move mountains. Those kinds of statements are sometimes hard for our human minds to grasp – but Gospel trio 2nd Generation knows first hand what it means to live a life of faith – and faith that is extravagant to be exact.
Group founders and sisters Elaine Robinson and Brenda Denney have been singing Gospel music for as long as they can remember. As children, they would go to bed listening to a stack of records placed on the record player. They would fall asleep listening to the music of The Happy Goodmans, The Rambos, Lanny Wolf Trio, Bill Gaither and many, many more. Gospel music runs deep in their roots, and once it’s in your bones – there’s no turning back. Jimmy Hoskins joined this trio in April 2007. He brings to these two sisters’ harmony a bluesy, jazz sound. Now, these three voices have come together to continue what God has called them to do. Sing and minister. “Jimmy was such an obvious choice for our group,” mentioned Elaine. “We immediately felt a connection with him and his wife, Sharon, and we knew that Jimmy was who God wanted to help fulfill the vision of this trio that He started in us.” In 2008, 2nd Generation ministered at a church, and in that service, the pastor spoke about living with an extravagant faith – a faith that would indeed move mountains. “We were immediately struck with a feeling that 2nd Generation was called to be a ministry that experienced a faith like that,” recalled Brenda. “Once we started believing with a supernatural faith – God really started opening doors and taking us down paths that we never dreamed.” One of those paths was taking the ministry on the road fulltime – a dream that all three singers have had but never knew how it would be fulfilled. “We just couldn’t believe how fast God was marching us towards a full-time ministry,” remarked Elaine. “We just had to trust God that He knew what was best for us!” Brenda said, “We would head out on a Friday and be home for work on Monday at 8:00 a.m. There had been many Sunday nights that we would come rolling in at 2:00 a.m.”
She continued, “When you know that you know that you are called to do something, you love it, you enjoy it, you can do the crazy hours and still want to continue going. Elaine and I had been hanging onto our jobs, having faith in them for our provisions. You get comfortable knowing that you are secure in your job. You have income, insurance, benefits, etc. Well, as we have all seen, there is no one that is secure in any job in our country right now, but we are secure in Jesus Christ. He has supplied all of our needs. He is our provider!”
Jimmy said, “It was time to go. If we didn't obey the call how can we stand before God on judgment day and hear Him say, ‘Well Done Thy Good & Faithful Servant’. 2nd Generation wants to do everything we can to make sure that we do not leave behind any unfinished task.”
That faith has paid off exceptionally well for the popular trio. The group has managed to land several charting songs – including Singing News Top 80 and SoGospelNews.com Top 40 hits like “Feel the Joy,” “I See a City,” and “Trouble Me No More.”
In 2009, the trio landed a nomination for Fan Favorite Artist of the Year in the SGN Music Awards – one of Southern Gospel’s premier awards programs.
2nd Generation has appeared at churches, State Fairs, The National Quartet Convention, Singing in the Sun, Trinity Broadcasting Network, Silver Dollar City, Branson Gospel Music Convention, SGN Music Fest, and many other events. Regardless of the setting their priority is to minister, not just sing a song. Their mission is that one life is changed as they leave a 2nd Generation concert because of a word spoken or a song that is sung. They want people to want more of God in their lives. “All of these things are just testaments that we are on the right path,” mentioned Jimmy. “They are great and wonderful – but ultimately we know the reason that we do this. God has called us to be a people who spread the Good News. That is our main desire.” God continues to amaze that group as they travel in full-time ministry. After all, isn’t it amazing what a little faith can do?
